DIY Easter Bunny Treat Jar

Turn a plain candy jar into a darling Easter bunny candy jar. This is a simple DIY Easter decoration and a fun spring craft idea.

Let’s make something fun for Easter today! I’ve had this idea rolling around in my brain for a while… I wanted to make a candy jar that looks like a bunny. So I grabbed a few inexpensive supplies and started experimenting.

I am really happy with the finished craft, but there were definitely some wrong turns along the way. I used the wrong kind of paint and it looked streaky and wouldn’t stick. I cut my finger. I took all the twine off a metal pail, then decided I did want it after all. I changed my mind about the ribbon and the bunny ears I used. LOL. It’s all part of the process. Luckily, I worked out all the kinks so you don’t have to!

Want to make your own Easter bunny candy jar? Here are the supplies you will need.

Materials Needed

  • Dollar Tree Candy Jar with Lid (or substitute a glass one)
  • Dollar Tree Metal Bucket
  • Bunny Ears Pick
  • Spray Paint – White or Heirloom White
  • White Pipe Cleaner
  • Spring Ribbon – I recommend 7/8″ size
  • White Pom Pom 1.5 inch
  • Scrap Colored Cardstock: Black and Pink
  • Paper Hole Punch
  • Scissors
  • Floral Stem Cutter or Wire Cutter
  • Hot Glue Gun + Gluesticks

Dollar Tree sells bunny ear headbands that would be cute to use for this project. That was my original plan. But once I saw the jute and eucalyptus ears, I just knew they would be so pretty I had to use them instead!

Instructions

Step 1: Cover the twine portion of the metal bucket with painter’s tape, then spray paint the metal part white. I tried using acrylic craft paint to cover the metal and it did not stick well and looked horrible and streaky, so I definitely recommend using spray paint instead. Make sure to paint the bottom of the bucket. I also thought I wanted to remove the twine, so I took it all off, spray painted the metal, then had to glue all the twine back on. Woopsie! Just cover it with tape instead and save yourself the extra work.

Step 2: Flip the painted and dried metal bucket upside down and attach the candy jar to the top with hot glue.

Step 3: Use floral stem cutters to cut the metal stick off of the bunny ear pick. I pushed as hard as I could at a few different angles, then bent the metal back and forth until it came off.

Step 4: Glue the bunny ears to the top of the candy jar. I made a really thick blob of hot glue, pressed the ears down into it, then used more hot glue to go around the edges. Then I held it in place for a really long time until I was sure the glue had cooled and it worked great!

Don’t worry about that ugly blob of hot glue. I have the perfect way to disguise it. Grab the jute bow that was on the bunny ear pick and slip it off the metal rod. Then glue it in place on the back of the bunny ears and it will completely cover the hot glue. Woohoo!

Step 3: Remove the lid from the candy jar. It’s time to make a bunny face! Cut a pipe cleaner into three equal pieces, then twist them together and glue them under the knob on the lid to look like whiskers. For eyes, I used a hole punch to make two black cardstock circles and added white dots with a paint pen. Then I cut a little heart out of pink cardstock and glue it into the top of the knob for a darling bunny nose.

Step 3: Use hot glue to attach a pom pom tail to the back of the candy jar. Tie a ribbon and bow around the middle. Here’s another area where I changed my plan on the go… I thought I wanted a big old bow, but the 2.5 inch ribbon I chose was just too large and overwhelmed the rest of the craft. So I folded it in thirds and used it anyway. 7/8″ ribbon is a much better size to use for this project.

Then look at your adorable Easter bunny candy jar! Isn’t it so fun?!

I filled mine with faux decorative eggs for now, but I plan to fill it with Cadbury Mini Eggs when it gets a little closer to Easter. I cannot resist those dang candies, so I can’t buy them yet or they will be demolished before Easter is even remotely close. LOL.

There are a ton of different ways you can customize this craft. Change out the ribbon you use or the type of bunny ears. Add different flowers. Make the face look different. Paint the metal bucket a different way. Add faux fur. So many fun possibilities! I hope you have so much fun making it. Happy crafting!
