How to Make Funny Face Planters

Learn how to make the viral pot head planters. Turn a plain terracotta pot into a hilarious planter with a funny face on it.

Have you seen these funny face planters around on the ol’ internet? People are calling them pot head planters. They’ve been popping up all over online but no one is sharing instructions and I thought they looked like a load of fun to make, so I gave it a go and recorded the whole process to show you. Now you can feel confident making them too!

Grab a few girlfriends and a few supplies and let’s get crafting!

Materials Needed

  • Terracotta Flower Pots (size medium, around 8 inches tall)
  • Wood Ball Knobs (about 1 inch size)
  • Craft Paint
  • Paint Brushes in Various Sizes
  • Wiggle Eyes (any size)
  • Bandanas
  • Party Glasses
  • Oil Pastels + Cotton Ball (optional, for blushing cheeks)
  • Hot Glue Gun + Glue Sticks

You can get as creative you want with the materials you use for this project. You could make yarn or felt hair instead of using a bandana. Or cut up a piece of scrap fabric to make the headwrap. Use big wooden balls for a bigger nose or mismatched google eyes. Add eyeshadow or freckles or beauty marks. I saw a bedazzled lips sticker at the craft store and just had to buy it for this project. LOL. You could also use fake eyelashes to give the eyes even more dimension. If you are nervous about your painting skills, cut the eyebrows and lips out of adhesive vinyl. There are so many fun options to personalize these!

The glasses are a huge part of what makes this craft turn out so fun and silly. I used one pair I found in the summer section, one from the party supply section and an old pair we had hanging around that have an outdated prescription. The dollar store would be a great place to look too. Sunglasses would work and you could always pop the lenses out if you want to be able to see the eyes. Lots of options!

Paint pens would be great for this project if you feel more confident painting with them.

Instructions

Step 1: Add hot glue to the flat part of a wood bead then glue it onto the pot. This is why you want to get this specific type of wood bead. If you get one without the flat spot, it’s harder to get it to attach to the pot. Paint the entire pot in the skin color of your choice.

Step 2: Add googly eyes with hot glue, then start painting on the face details… lips, teeth, eyebrows, eyelashes… whatever floats your boat! I love to rub a piece of oil pastel on a cotton ball, then dab it in circular motions on the cheeks to make it look like blush.

Step 3: As-is, a bandana is not large enough to wrap around the pot and tie in a bow, so I had to get creative. Cut the bandana in half, then roll one half up into a long strip with fraying cut ends inside. The other half of the bandana will make the bow. Fold the ends in, then fold it in thirds, then tie it into a knot. It makes the perfect sized bow!

Step 4: Secure the bandana strip around the top edge of the pot with hot glue.

Step 5: Add the bow to the front to cover the gap where the bandana didn’t reach.

Step 6: Now my favorite step… it’s time to add the glasses. I secured mine with hot glue in a couple places just to be sure they don’t fall off.

PRO TIP: If you are going to plant live plants in these pots, you’ll need to seal the terracotta with a sealing product or water from the soil will seep through and mess with your design.

Then your funny face pot head planter is all done! These gals CRACK. ME. UP. Each one has a different personality and I just think because they all turn out differently, this would make a really fun group craft to do with friends.
