I love caramel apples. Actually, scratch that— I love the taste of caramel apples. But honestly, they are kind of hard to make and very inconvenient to eat!

To make sheet pan caramel apples, start by spraying a sheet pan with nonstick cooking spray or lining the pan with a silicone liner or parchment paper. Cut thin slices of green apple, then dry the slices thoroughly with paper towels. Lay all of the slices out evenly on the sheet pan.

Make your favorite from-scratch caramel or melt down the pre-wrapped Kraft caramels with a bit of cream. Of course the from-scratch caramel is amazing, but if that is intimidating to you or if you want to save time, the caramel squares taste great too.

While the caramel is still liquidy but not scorching hot, pour it evenly over the apple slices. Let cool a bit, then add toppings. You want to find the sweet spot where the caramel is still wet enough so that the toppings stick, but not so warm that it melts them.

Caramel Apple Topping Ideas

  • Mini M&M’s
  • Chopped Nuts
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Melted Chocolate
  • White Chocolate + Cinnamon Sugar (tastes like apple pie!)
  • Crushed Pretzel Pieces
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Chopped Candy Bar Pieces
  • Peanut Butter Chips
  • Crushed Oreos
  • Graham Cracker Crumbs

Cool completely, then serve. This dessert is best served as soon as the caramel cools. I used a sharp metal spatula to cut between apples. You can also eat it family-style and just grab individual apple slices straight off the pan.

Cover and store leftovers in the fridge, but be warned that the apples may release their juices in the fridge, which will add liquid to the caramel. It still tastes amazing, it just gets a bit runny and isn’t as pretty to serve to guests. This recipe is definitely best eaten the same day it is made. Or you might want to adjust the amount you make so that you won’t have leftovers… cut the recipe in half and use a smaller pan.

A lot of viewers on social media were worried about cleaning the pan afterwards, but it wasn’t hard at all. I soaked it in hot water and that dissolved the caramel easily.
