Learn how to make a delicious loaf of fresh, warm homemade oat bread. This bread is soft, chewy and flavorful thanks to the addition of oatmeal.

I’m so excited for you to try today’s recipe! This oat bread is simple to make with just a few basic ingredients, but the addition of the oats adds a great flavor and texture to the bread and is a nice change of pace from plain homemade bread.

I first made this recipe 15+ years ago and added it to my recipe box where I keep tried-and-true winners, but it has been years since I made it. Well, I whipped some up for my family this past week and they absolutely devoured it. Huge, huge hit! I mean, they just raved about it and I had forgotten just how delicious it was. I’m telling you, the texture is just so good! It’s chewy and soft but rich in flavor and hearty thanks to the oats. It really is just such a nice loaf of bread.

I want you to be able to make it for your family too, so here we are!

You only need seven ingredients to make this oat bread recipe. Let’s talk about a couple of them.

Ingredients Needed

  • Water
  • Butter
  • Salt
  • Bread Flour
  • Quick Oats (or Rolled Oats)
  • Brown Sugar
  • Active Dry Yeast

I recommend using bread flour any time you’re baking bread. All-purpose flour will work, but bread flour works better. It has a higher protein content, which helps the bread rise and hold air to make the loaf soft.

The amount of flour in the recipe is the minimum suggestion. You may need to add more if your dough is too sticky.

You can use quick oats or rolled oats for this recipe. Quick oats will be softer in the final loaf, while rolled oats will stay a bit more firm for more texture. It’s a personal preference but both are delicious!

  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • Shape the dough into a loaf and place in a greased 9"x5" bread pan. Cover with a towel and let raise again until it's the size of a loaf of bread.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped, or until the internal temperature reaches 190 degrees.
  • Cool before slicing. Store in an airtight bag at room temperature.
